To counter the various threats to rice, the “Save Our Rice” Campaign was initiated in 2003 with the following objectives:
1. To promote biodiversity-based ecological agriculture as the preferred mode of agriculture for sustainable livelihoods, food security, food sovereignty, and gender justice in the region.
2. To advocate for the right to safe food and nutrition of rice farming communities and rice consumers in the AP.
3. To raise public awareness and policy advocacy through regional sharing, collaboration, cooperation and networking based on the following Five Pillars of Rice Wisdom:
Rice Culture protects the culture and spirituality of the people, uphold the role of women in rice communities, and preserve the wisdom of rice culture.
Community Wisdom recognizes farmers as scientists, conservationists, breeders and innovators.
Biodiversity-Based Ecological Agriculture preserves traditional rice varieties and ecosystems where biodiversity is protected and agricultural methods are ecologically sound and safe.
Safe Food rejects the use of hazardous substances such as pesticides and technologies such as genetic engineering
Food Sovereignty ensures the rights of people and communities to decide on food and agriculture policies, the right to adequate, culturally appropriate and safe food, the right to land and productive resources, the right to sustainable production and livelihoods and gender justice.
